HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (AS OF 2/17/09)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS*

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Obtain one (1) recent news article. This article must be recent (i.e. no older than 3 days). It must be clipped...PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE CLASS; UNCLIPPED ARTICLES WILL RECEIVE -2 PENALTY.

Assignment Specs:

1. ARTICLE TYPE: GENERAL INTEREST
2. ARTICLE NEWS ELEMENT: PROXIMITY
3. DATE RANGE: 2/17 to 2/19 (i.e. Recent articles ONLY!!!)
4. Source and Date of Publishing MUST be included on page
5. DUE NEXT CLASS MEETING

II. Type your 'This I Believe' Essay (that you wrote in class today). You may add to the essay, but please follow the prescribed type specifications:

SPECIFIC TYPING CRITERIA: When I evaluate your work, I will be looking for substantial compliance of the following:

• Use this SLUG heading in the upper right hand corner: THIS I BELIEVE
• Include a Byline in the upper right hand corner.
• Include the Copy # in the upper right hand corner.
• Writing must be DOUBLE SPACED (automatic penalty if you submit a single spaced paper).
• Times New Roman ONLY!!!!! 12 point font ONLY!!!!! Margins should be 0.5” all around (i.e. Top, Bottom, Left, and Right). (-5)
• Open with the phrase ‘I believe in…’ Please express clearly, probably in the first sentence, your belief.
• The overall gist (meaning) or the main idea of your essay (your belief statement) should be clear and concise. It should be clearly stated near the beginning of the essay and IT MUST BE UNDERLINED. (-2)
• Write only in the present tense…THIS IS HIGHLY CRITICAL.
• Indicate knowledge of the subject (you do know what you believe in…don’t you?)
• Follow an organizational plan that best attracts the reader’s attention.
• STIFF PENALTIES FOR SIMPLE GRAMMAR MISTAKES…PLEASE PROOFREAD YOUR WORK (-5 for sentence structure errors, -3 for grammatical errors, and -2 for spelling errors)
• PROOFREAD YOUR PAPER AND CORRECT YOUR ERRORS… I AM NOT YOUR ROOFREADER!!!!
• Stick to the assigned main idea and purpose of this assignment. Do not include any extraneous information that is not relevant to the topic of your essay. If you deviate from the assignment I will deduct points.
• Essay must be AT LEAST ONE FULL PAGE, including no LESS than 300 WORDS in the body. You may exceed one page, but not go over two. (automatic penalty if you submit a paper less than what is required).
• Your name and honor code MUST be written on the back of the last page only. If your name and honor do not appear on the back you will lose points. (-10 if not present)
• Your paper must have THIS SHEET attached to the front. If you do not use the rubric you will not know how to earn an A paper. PLEASE CONSULT THE RUBRIC SO THAT YOU MAY KNOW WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR AND EXPECTING. (-10 if not present)

III. Prepare for a discussion on the Presidential Press Conference (held on 2/9/09).

***NOTE: A copy of the transcript can be found on the class blog or in the class folder on the school's T Drive. A video copy of the event is also on the T Drive and on this blog.

IV. Complete the Time Tracks Interview Assignment (Copy #). Please use the rubric. DUE 2/17/09

V. Familiarize yourself with this week's current events...use this site as a central hub for news and information!

IF YOU MISSED THE QUIZ ON 02/17/09...YOU MUST STAY AFTER SCHOOL ON 02/24/09 FOR MAKE UP.

VI. Organize your notebook. SEE NOTEBOOK STRUCTURE CHART (on blog). AS INDICATED IN CLASS THIS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!

VII. Begin tabulating the results from your group survey. All tabulation should be completed by 2/27/09.

VIII. Read Chapter 6. I will provide you with a copy of the format guide sheet in the coming weeks. An Outline of the Chapter will be DUE 3/3/09.

IX. Read the guide sheet for the LIVE Student Interviews that will take place 2/23, 25, and 27. Familiarize yourself with the information and come prepared to read your 'This I Believe' essay on 2/19/09.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS*

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Review Chapter 5 topics/concepts. Read the outline, add supplemental notes, create study note cards. LEARN THE MATERIAL...DON'T MEMORIZE IT.*

*NOTE: Please review your chapter notes periodically. We are never 'done' with the chapter topics/concepts.

II. Study chapter vocabulary. In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post. To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards. STANDARD [JV1]

III. Bring Materials/Supplies to class; this includes textbooks, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

IV. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.
