BULLETIN: TE Assignment Prompt (PLEASE READ!!!)

Students, here is the TE prompt discussed in class today. Your response will be used in tomorrow's Brainstorming session. Have fun!

TOPIC/SLUG HEADING: HISTORY’S BEST (OR WORST)

BACKGROUND: By now you should be familiar with a few of history’s most influential men and women. Some of these individuals are your heroes and heroines, whereas others are the object of your vilification. Use your knowledge of history to respond to the following topic question.

PREWRITING ASSIGNMENTS: (1) FIRST consider the topic, then (2) complete individual brainstorming, and prepare to write down your views.

TOPIC QUESTION ASSIGNMENTS: Complete ALL of the assignments. Check off the items as you complete them.

____ (1) In your response, discuss five historical (i.e. dead) individuals that you would most want to meet.

____ (2) Answer these questions within the context of your response: (a) Identify five (5) historical (dead) individuals that you would most want to meet. Rank them in order of importance from 1 to 5 (with 1 being the highest). Remember, you must select persons that have made a significant impact. Don’t forget to include comments that highlight what makes them famous or important.

*NOTE: This is not a bulleted list; the response should be written as a journal entry. In addition, you must explain in detail why this person makes your ‘list.’

____ (3) NEXT, when you have written your response, please write two bulleted ‘quotables’ beneath the last sentence. These quotables should be clear and concise, and stating the overall gist (meaning) of your response, opinion, argument, etc.

GENERAL WRITING RULES: In your response discuss five historical (i.e. dead) individuals that you would most want to meet. Also, please adhere to ALL of the following rules:

• You may want to consider your audience; it may be a group of teens or adults that you are trying to reach.
• You also may want to think about the overall purpose of your piece. Are you seeking to convince, indoctrinate, inform, etc.?
• Use real examples from the assigned text or from current events to bolster your position. Then offer possible suggestions and alternatives.
• You MUST use the column format, rhetorical devices and modes of developments (i.e. examples, rhetorical questions, description, cause and effect, etc.) within your response.
• DO NOT USE REAL NAMES. Under no circumstance are you to use this as a forum to criticize a person. This is NOT an opportunity for you to launch an open attack on one of your friends or acquaintances. Remember the rule of ‘right of reply.’ If that person is not here to defend himself or herself then your comments of criticism are not permitted.
• Your writing should be publishable…you are not writing down random thoughts and ideas…they MUST be organized, easy to understand, logical, relevant to some degree, timely, etc.

SPECIFIC WRITING RULES:

• Writing must be at least one page, including no LESS than 250-300 words in the body
• Must include the following SLUG heading: HISTORY’S BEST (OR WORST)
• Must have a byline beneath the SLUG in the upper right corner (i.e. By Larry Knight)
• Must have a copy # beneath the byline in the upper right corner (i.e. Copy #1)
• At the end of your piece (above the -30- ) you must type two bulleted one sentence quotables. These quotables should be clear and concise, and stating the overall gist (meaning) of your response, opinion, argument, etc.
