TOPIC: The Force of Change
BACKGROUND INFO: In the past 10 years Americans have witnessed a number of school related acts of violent. It has been proven by sociologists and behaviorialists that most of the acts could have been prevented if the warning signs had been recognized. In most cases, according to these scholars, the perpetrators of these violent acts either warn or threaten their peers and/or teachers before they commit them.

The media sometimes implies that getting into a fight makes someone "cool". At Stanton, everyone wants to learn so the students do not fight. According to safeyouth.org, in 2001 12.5% of students had been in a physical fight at school in the United States. The numbers have increased since then.

The behavior of a student is impacted by the way they feel and are treated by others. It is not in the Bill of Rights, but treating people with respect is an unwritten code of conduct. Therefore, it is the role of students, parents, administrators, and the media to make a school environment a safe place.

Students are always encouraged to work out issues in a nonviolent way, but are constantly seeing the media portray violence as a good thing. These two messages can be confusing, and it is the teen's responsibility to make the right decision. Stanton is a safe place for students to learn and not get involved in violence.
Students play a major role in school safety because it is their job to treat one another with respect. The media should embrace this and discourage violence in the schools because schools are learning environments that should make a student feel safe. Stanton is a fairly safe school and the majority of students attending would not participate in a fight because they are preoccupied with clubs, school and sports.
The safety is not an issue at Stanton because most students are committed to academics, sports, and other school or recreational activites though the same cannot be said for all schools. Media and other authorities should have enough responsibility to encourage students in a positive way because the students make up the main population of the school which could pose as a threat if violence occurs.
When violence is brought into a school, even Stanton, the conflict is usually inconsequential but the outcome could be dire. Though it could be avoided if the students come forth and tell an administer or parent about it before it occurs. According to http://nces.ed.gov, 60 school violent deaths occurred between 1997 and 1998 which could have been prevented.
If the behavior and mindset of the students are not positive then the school cant be considered "safe". In the top ten crime statistics, attacks with weapons counted for 11,000 incidents in public schools. The media's portrayals of fighting is relativly positive. Shows like wrestling influence kids everyday.
Students, parents, and administrators play very major roles in the school enviroment. Parents hould teacher thier kids responsibility and safety tools on how to act in a school setting, the students should abide by those morales, and the administrators should enforce the school rules. At stanton we strive to peform excellent behavior as students, if we don't then who will?
