BULLETIN: Marking History...Jan. 28, 1986






At about 11:30 AM, Eastern Time, January 28, 1986, the Shuttle Challenger was launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Aboard the ship were its Commander, Francis R. "Dick" Scobee, its pilot, Michael J. Smith, and its crew, Christa McAuliffe (the first 'Teacher in Space'), Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka, Judith A. Resnick and Ronald E. McNair, along with Payload Specialist Gregory B. Jarvis.

Seventy-three seconds into the mission, the Challenger exploded and fell into the sea. On April 29, 1986 the identified remains that had been located were turned over to their families for burial. However, there were number of unidentified remains. These remains were buried at Arlington National Cemetery on May 20, 1986, beneath the Memorial that appears below. Two of the crewmembers, Scobee and Smith, were buried in Arlington National Cemetery as well.

TOPIC: The Force of Change

BACKGROUND INFO: In the past 20 years Americans have witnessed a number of school related acts of violence. It has been proven by sociologists and behavioralists that most of the acts could have been prevented if the warning signs had been recognized.

In most cases, according to these scholars, the perpetrators of these violent acts either warn or threaten their peers and/or teachers before they commit them.

TOPIC QUESTION: What role (if any) do students play in maintaining a safe environment at school? What role (if any) should the media, parents, and administrators play? Comment on the safety and social structure of your school. Are they connected in any way?

ASSIGNMENT: Time Tracks Interview Research Assignment

PROJECT RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT: TIME TRACKS Q&A INTERVIEW
Journalism I (2010-2011)/KNIGHT

MATERIALS: Steno pad, access to computer and internet, any number of physical sources, pencil, pen, and highlighter

OBJECTIVE: You should be able to glean specific, relevant and useful information about your interview subject using your researching, notetaking, and independent study skills.

TASK: Use the provided time to conduct your research for your assigned Time Tracks Interview subject. Use the internet (accurate sources ONLY), resource books (encyclopedias, research books, etc) to find information about your interview subject. Your information should be useful in helping the initial framing of your interview. DUE 1/11/11

During the activity you MUST do the following:

1. Take out the necessary materials FIRST.
2. Show some evidence of researching, notetaking, as well as active listening/speaking/questioning skills.
3. Collect notes on the information/data that your uncover. BE SPECIFIC. ASK FOR CLARIFICATION!!!!
4. Print, copy, or rewrite any information that will aid you in the completion of your project.

At the end of the activity I will expect that a written ‘report’ be produced and prepared for either submission or discussion. This report should be labeled with the following ALL CAPS, underlined heading: TIME TRACKS INTERVIEW PROJECT RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT

The report should then include the following bulleted headings:

• Interviewer (this is you)
• Interview Subject (this is the person you are interviewing)
• Interview Subject’s Significance (what specific thing did this person do to warrant an interview; this needs to be S-P-E-C-I-F-I-C!!!)
