TOPIC/SLUG: THE CENSORSHIP QUESTION (PART 1)
BACKGROUND: The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution states: ‘Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.’
PREWRITING ASSIGNMENTS: (1) FIRST consider the topic, then (2) organize your commentary (it should have a beginning, middle, and end), and (3) prepare to write down your views.
TOPIC QUESTION ASSIGNMENTS: (1) In your response, discuss the issue of censoring media content.
(2) NEXT, when writing address ALL of the following in the context of your response: write your views on the issue of censorship. In addition, try to answer these questions in your response:
(a) Should open-air radio stations be allowed to broadcast music and/or programming that contains explicit lyrics or content? (b) What are the possible benefits or disadvantages? (c) Follow-up question: Is the use of explicit lyrics in songs an act of artistic expression or something else? DON’T BE AFRAID TO EXPLORE OTHER CONCEPTS NOT PRESENTED IN THE ABOVE QUESTIONS.NOTE: Also, consider the following in your response: What are possible motivations, intentions, and possible faults. (3) NEXT, when you have written your response, please write two bulleted ‘quotables’ beneath the last sentence. These quotables should be clear and concise, and stating the overall gist (meaning) of your response, opinion, argument, etc.
(4) FINALLY, write two stock questions based on this topic. The questions should be general in nature and should be written in your steno pad. The questions must begin with ‘why,’ ‘who,’ ‘what,’ etc. This means your questions must be open-ended.
