Students will view the PBS documentary ‘JFK: Breaking the News’ and analyze the ways in which both print and broadcast (radio and television) covered the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Students will address the following through analysis, evidence, and commentary:



a.            Which form of media was most effective in its coverage?

b.            What is the historical significance of the media’s role as it covered this event?

c.            What were your general thoughts and impressions of the event (and documentary)?



FILM ANALYSIS QUESTIONS (‘9/11’):



Students will view the documentary ‘9/11’ and analyze the ways in which the filmmakers covered the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Students will address the following through analysis, evidence, and commentary:



a.            What were your general thoughts and impressions of the event (and documentary)?

b.            What is the historical significance of the media’s role as it covered this event?

c.            Were the filmmakers effective in their coverage and documentation of the event?


Please prepare to discuss these question next class; the responses are DUE 10/30/12.

II.Obtain ONE recent news article. This article must be recent (i.e. no older than 3 days). It must be clipped...PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE CLASS; ARTICLES NOT LABELED OR POSTED NEATLY WILL RECEIVE A -2 PENALTY. NO OPINION PIECES OR MAGAZINE ARTICLES.

FILM ANALYSIS QUESTIONS (‘JFK: Breaking the News’):



Students will view the PBS documentary ‘JFK: Breaking the News’ and analyze the ways in which both print and broadcast (radio and television) covered the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Students will address the following through analysis, evidence, and commentary:



a.            Which form of media was most effective in its coverage?

b.            What is the historical significance of the media’s role as it covered this event?

c.            What were your general thoughts and impressions of the event (and documentary)?



FILM ANALYSIS QUESTIONS (‘9/11’):



Students will view the documentary ‘9/11’ and analyze the ways in which the filmmakers covered the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Students will address the following through analysis, evidence, and commentary:



a.            What were your general thoughts and impressions of the event (and documentary)?
b.            What is the historical significance of the media’s role as it covered this event?
c.            Were the filmmakers effective in their coverage and documentation of the event?

VI. Review your Group Project (Chapter 1 Concepts); research your selected topic for discussion. Both you and your partner should feel comfortable discussing the topic for at least 20 minutes

V. Schedule time to watch the first vice presidential debate (on 10/11/12 @ 9 PM). You should take specific notes (obtain quotes from the candidates, questions you would ask, and write general observation notes).
