VIDEO: "Mardi Gras marches on the other side of the Quarter " (WWL-TV)

NEW ORLEANS -- While Rex and Zulu made their way down St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, there was another Mardi Gras party brewing a short distance from the French Quarter in the Marigny.
Revelers gathered at the corner of Royal and Kerlerec streets to take part in Carnival, the way it was before the super krewes.
Folks in the Marigny take their costumes very seriously. Each reveler is like a finely crafted float on parade in a part of town known for its cool nightclubs and restaurants.
Brian Johnston dressed up as actress Tippy Hedren in Hitchcock classic "The Birds," complete with gray dress, black birds and phone booth.
"I like showing off a costume, but I also like to see everyone else's costumes," said Johnston. "Everybody is more creative on this side of Esplanade Avenue."
Nick Galliano dressed as a French Quarter lamppost.
"Love New Orleans," said Galliano. "Want to be part of New Orleans."
The costumes also included a family of "Smurfs," the band Kiss, a man driving a banana mobile and a number of outfits with BP related themes.
Strolling parades also come at you from every direction in the Marigny.
The "Mondo Kayo" parade had a latin flavor. The St. Anthony Ramblers were accompanied by the Panorama Brass Band. And, the Society of St. Ann was led by a group of friends in marching band costumes from the fictitious "St. Madonna's Academy of the Accidental Conception."
People enjoying the festivities on the other side of the quarter say they wouldn't think of starting Mardi Gras Day any other way.

NEW ORLEANS - 2011 marks the five-year anniversary of the Mardi Gras that almost wasn't. In 2005, after Katrina, the city grappled with whether to let the show go on. Naysayers said it couldn't, but many said it must.
“Katrina knocked us down but didn't knock us out,” said Ike Wheeler, King Zulu 2005 to 2006.
Wheeler’s simple words punctuated a monumental toast. King Zulu raised a glass to Mayor Ray Nagin on Mardi Gras Day, 2006. “We called it the most important Mardi Gras ever,” said Carnival expert Errol Laborde.
In 2006, he even put that phrase on the cover of the magazine he publishes, New Orleans Magazine.
“The Zulu organization was one of the first to come out and say, we're gonna parade. We must parade,” Laborde said.
But Carnival almost didn't happen. In December of 2005, an evacuated New Orleanian in Atlanta asked Nagin, "How can we be having a Mardi Gras and we aren't even there?" Nagin agreed, setting off a firestorm of controversy.
“It would've sent the word that New Orleans is so down and out it can't even have a parade. It would've told the world New Orleans was a dead city,” Laborde said.
Fears of inadequate emergency services from police to hospital beds dominated the debate.
“Right now, we only have 1,800 beds in the entire region to care for patients that we once had 5,000 beds for,” said LSU Emergency Services Chief Dr. James Aiken in early 2006.
Just like the recovery itself, New Orleanians and the Carnival krewes banded together to make sure Katrina couldn't rain on the city's parades.
“This Mardi Gras represented a turning point of sorts. It basically sent the message to the world that New Orleans is on its way back. It was also a psychological release for a lot of our residents,” Nagin said in 2006, shortly after Carnival concluded.
Ironically, Laborde said 2006 was the first time in history that rain forced the super krewe of Endymion to roll after Bacchus on the Uptown route, just like it did this year.
“Last year, in 2010, we saw the largest Mardi Gras that we've had in 25 years and this year because of a number of factors, there are predictions we could hit that number again or maybe even break it a little,” said Jennifer Day, Marketing Director for the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Just five short years after a Katrina brought the city to its knees, New Orleans could very well be in the middle of one of the biggest celebrations in the city's history.

NEW ORLEANS - The ceremony at St. Louis Cemetery Number Three started somber and solemn, as members of the Guardians of the Flame tribe gathered near the grave of their founder, Big Chief Donald Harrison. But it didn't take long for the spirit, maybe his spirit, to seize them.
"As a third generation Mardi Gras Indian, I realized that I inherited something quite special, in that we are responsible for carrying it on. My father gave us a charge to continue masking in a traditional Uptown style," said Big Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson.
Donald Harrison's daughter Cherice points out Indian traditions in the African American community could pre-date the Mardi Gras, and the civil war.
But now the suits the Guardians of the Flame wear are designed to be more than just pretty.
"My father told us that if you were masking, and you just wanted to be pretty, you were not a Guardian of the Flame. To be a Guardian of the Flame, you had to engage in social commentary."
So her home in Musicians' Village was a busy place today, packed with family members and friends, and lots of sewing as they rushed to complete the suits to be worn by tribe members as young as three.
Cherice is passing on the traditions.
"You must guard that flame. To whom must is given, much is expected. We expect a lot of you. We expect you to do well in school, we expect you to read."
Cherise's son Brian, who is following in his grandfather's steps as Big Chief, is home from college in Los Angeles, showing part of his master's thesis project, a film about Mardi Gras Indians titled 'Keepers of the Flame' and featuring actor Harold Sylvester, plus real Indian tribe members.
"My teachers at USC say 'wow, we've never heard a film score like this before,' because it is all Mardi Gras Indian music, the entire score," said Brian Nelson, the project's Writer and Director.
Family friend Janet Cunningham comes in from Los Angeles on her Mardi Gras vacation each year, and helps sew the suits.
"What a wonderful thing this is to have an opportunity to participate in," said Janet. "I feel I can bridge my experiences as an African American with those of my ancestral homeland, and at the same time pay homage to my father's memory," Cherice Nelson said.
The song Brian is singing right now is called Sew, Sew, Sew. They've got to leave right now because that's what they've got a lot more of to do, sewing to finish the suits that they're going to wear tomorrow.
Their day starts very early, and they'll be wearing the suits they spent so long making, and we'll be with them.
