HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (5/5/14)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: These assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Obtain TWO recent news articles. These articles must be recent (i.e. no older than 3 days). It must be clipped...PLEASE DO THIS BEFORE CLASS; ARTICLES NOT LABELED OR POSTED NEATLY WILL RECEIVE A -5 PENALTY. NO OPINION PIECES OR MAGAZINE ARTICLES.

3. ARTICLE NEWS ELEMENT: student choice (YOU MUST LABEL ON PAGE)

4. LABEL DATES (this goes in upper right hand corner of page): 5/6/14 and 5/7/14
5. SOURCE: Student choice (Source and Date of Publishing MUST be included on page)
6. POINT VALUE: 20 points (work must be labeled correctly for full credit)

II. Check www.scpjournalism1.blogspot.com daily for posted AP news stories. DUE DAILY

III. 
Review ALL skills concepts (e.g. recognition of elements of news, use of news judgment to evaluate stories, the process of brainstorming), as well as Chapter 4 and 5 concepts (e.g. types of sources and the Devil’s Advocate organizational structure, introduced interviewing concepts). Prepare for informal skills and knowledge assessments. TEST 5/9/14

IV. Read Chapter 6 (News Story Leads). Complete the outline for Chapter 6. DUE 5/9/14 (ICC: 50 points, TIINC: 25 points)

V. Prepare for your In-Class Interview. Review your questions and the student's essay. Interviews will resume next class meeting. 

BULLETINS

I. Applicant interviews are currently underway (4/28, 4/30, 5/2, and 5/6). The schedule was uploaded to Schoology this past weekend. You will have two interviews with the two prospective candidates for Editor-in-Chief. Please put your dates and times on your calendar.

II. The Time Tracks Interview Assignment is about to resume. If you haven't collected additional resources, you should.

III. The CEQ for Weeks 32 and 33) will given to you 5/13/14 instead of 5/9/14. Please make the changes to your schedule.

IV. If you are a prospective member of the 2014-2015 Devil’s Advocate staff, please check your availability for the staff workshops in August. This is a real workshop necessary for inclusion on the staff. Here are the revised dates and the workshop topics:

  • August 4: Orientation and News Story writing
  • August 5: Blogging and News Story writing
  • August 6: Brainstorming for Issue 1 and Feature Story writing
  • August 7: Brainstorming for Issue 1 and Feature Story writing
  • August 8: Opinions writing and Staff Lunch

There will be activities and assignments completed during these workshops. It will be your staff orientation before the first day of school. Attendance is strongly encouraged.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

 I. Review Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 topics/concepts. Read the outline, supplemental notes, and create study note cards. LEARN THE MATERIAL...DON'T MEMORIZE IT.*

*NOTE: Please review your chapter notes periodically. We are never 'done' with the chapter topics/concepts.

II. Study chapter vocabulary. In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post. To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards. STANDARD [JV1]

III. Bring Materials/Supplies to class; this includes textbooks, steno pads, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

IV. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.

VI. Review AP (Associated Press) style rules and concepts. Read the style books, supplemental notes, and create study note cards. LEARN THE MATERIAL...DON'T MEMORIZE IT.*
